NASHVILLE, Tenn., August 20, 2014 – Buckingham Companies announced it will begin construction of the two acre site at the intersection of 21st Avenue South, Broadway and Division Street, adjacent to the Vanderbilt University campus. The project will bring an eclectic mix of residences and retail opportunities that will advance Midtown as an energetic, walkable district. Site preparation will make way for vertical construction, to start later this year, of a 17‐story, 600,000‐square‐foot, mixed‐use development that will include 350 apartments, a 180‐room full‐service hotel and 35,000 square feet of ground level retail space. It will bring 630 parking spaces and, through the hotel, approximately 6,500 square feet of meeting space to the area. Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants will operate the full‐service hotel.

Scott Travis, vice president of development at Indianapolis‐based Buckingham Companies, said the goal of the development—which is carrying a temporary name of Buckingham Midtown—is to create a unique, mixed‐use community that compliments and serves the thriving and eclectic Midtown neighborhood through its amenities and design.

“The project’s design has evolved and is intended to be reflective of and responsive to the creative and passionate feel of the Midtown area,” said Travis. “It will be situated at the heart of a neighborhood that is intellectual, diverse and energetic—our goal is to build upon those characteristics. This is evident through its architecture, which is modern facing the booming Midtown area and more traditional where it faces the storied Vanderbilt University campus."

“Kimpton has long admired the eclectic vitality of Nashville and we’re so excited to bring our unique amenities and guest experience to people traveling to the city,” said Mike Depatie, president and CEO of Kimpton. “We’ve been looking for the right opportunity in Nashville, and the Buckingham Midtown property is the perfect partnership for a number of reasons—Kimpton and Buckingham both value community, quality, great design and sustainability, and this development is in a position to enhance an already vibrant neighborhood.”

“Buckingham’s investment in Nashville is further validation of our city’s attractiveness and vibrancy,” Mayor Karl Dean said. “I commend the company for addressing the sensitivities of neighborhood residents by incorporating design elements that blend with the area.”

Buckingham Midtown is intended to be LEED certified upon completion. Retail attention in the project has been strong to date, with interest from those with innovative concepts either distinctive to Nashville or new to the local market, including restaurants and clothing boutiques. The residential unit offerings will be upscale and include studio and one, two and three bedroom floor plans. Residents will have access to high‐end amenities as well as be able to take advantage of hotel offerings such as the pool terrace and concierge services. Designers plan to incorporate visual and structural art into the building’s common spaces.

“Metro Nashville will be improving the 21st Avenue South and Broadway intersection with enhanced sidewalks, lighting and traffic improvements. These investments by the city in public infrastructure paired with the addition of the mixed use components of the Buckingham Midtown project have been designed to thoughtfully mesh with the vibe of Midtown,” said Travis.

Buckingham Midtown’s various components will open in phases with the completion estimated to be early 2017.

Buckingham Midtown will be built by Buckingham Construction Corporation in collaboration with Nashville‐based Crain Construction Co. The architect for Buckingham Midtown is Torti Gallas and Partners, based in Washington, D.C. and the engineering contractor is Littlejohn Engineering Associates of Nashville.
